You’ll be greeted with a wan “Shalom” as you enter, a waiter will sometimes appear in peyot Jewish sidelocks and kippah head covering , and you’ll be invited to haggle over your check. It may seem odd that I decided to visit this restaurant on a recent trip to explore some of my family’s roots. I expected to feel offended by its caricatures of Jews, and, by extension, myself. But the Golden Rose turned out to be more complex than it first appeared. In fact, this whole trip was a complex undertaking.

Two types of owned human beings appear regularly in rabbinic literature: the wife and the slave. Thinking of marriage as a purchase and women as ownable allowed rabbis to consider marriage, gender relations, and sexuality in terms of the legalities of property. Rabbinical works, dating as far back as the beginning of the third century CE, are the foundation of practices observed by significant segments of Jewish communities to this day.
These texts, along with the laws and ideas they expound, often have a vote, if not a veto, in discussions of Jewish ethics and practice. Recognizing the associations between marriage and slavery in rabbinic literature forces us to ask unsettling questions about Jewish traditions, laws, and practices today. Until we confront these questions, and reconfigure Jewish marriage on a model that does not involve metaphors of ownership, slavery will continue to exert its legacy on Jewish women.
Many of us may find it easier to accept the authority of these traditions even as we might subject them to reinterpretation than to imagine what we might put in their place that would still allow us to feel and act “authentically” Jewish.

It is part of didactic Jewish ethical literature. Because of its contents, the name is sometimes given as Ethics of the Fathers. Pirkei Avot consists of the Mishnaic tractate of Avot , the second-to-last tractate in the order of Nezikin in the Mishnah , plus one additional chapter. Avot is unique in that it is the only tractate of the Mishnah dealing solely with ethical and moral principles; there is little or no halakha laws found in Pirkei Avot.
The word avot means “fathers”, and thus Pirkei Avot is often rendered in English as “Chapters of the Fathers”, or more loosely “Ethics of the Fathers. However, the term ‘avot’ is not usually used as an honorary designation for ‘rabbis’ or ‘sages’; in rabbinical usage, it refers to the Patriarchs of the Bible. Rather, in the Mishnah , the word avot generally refers to fundamentals, or principal categories. Thus, the principal categories of creative work forbidden on Shabbat are called avot melacha , and the principal categories of ritual impurity are referred to as avot tum’ah.
The recognition of ethical maxims as ‘Fundamental Principles’ may derive from the high regard in which the Torah , Mishnah , and Talmud hold such wisdom. In Shabbat 31a, Hillel says “That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: This is the entire Torah, the rest is the explanation, go now and learn it. The Mishnaic tractate Avot consists of five chapters. It begins with an order of transmission of the Oral Tradition; Moses receives the Torah at Mount Sinai and then transmits it through various generations including Joshua , the Elders, and the Neviim , but notably not the Kohanim , whence it finally arrives at the Great Assembly , i. In Orthodox Jewish circles, dating is limited to the search for a marriage partner. Both sides usually the parents, close relatives or friends of the persons, and the singles themselves, involved make inquiries about the prospective partner, e. A shidduch often begins with a recommendation from family members, friends or others who see matchmaking as a mitzvah , or commandment. Some engage in it as a profession and charge a fee for their services.
Usually a professional matchmaker is called a shadchan , but anyone who makes a shidduch is considered the shadchan for it. After the match has been proposed, the prospective partners meet a number of times to gain a sense of whether they are right for one another. The number of dates prior to announcing an engagement may vary by community. In some, the dating continues several months. In stricter communities, the couple may decide a few days after originally meeting with each other.
Also the age when shidduchim start may vary by community. In frum circles, especially among Hassidim , eighteen is the age when shidduchim start and shadchanim take notice. Those who support marriage by shidduch believe that it complies with traditional Judaism ‘s outlook on Tzniut , modest behaviour in relations between men and women,   and prevents promiscuity. It may also be helpful in small Jewish communities where meeting prospective marriage partners is limited, and this gives them access to a broader spectrum of potential candidates.
If the shidduch works out then the couple inform the shadchan of its success.
Jewish virtue ethics and compassion for animals: a model from the Musar movement
God was conceived of as a moral God who demanded ethical behaviour of his children. Parents and educators should endeavor to interpret Biblical concepts for their children by applying Jewish ethics to situations in which adolescents are daily involved. Unless the teen-ager can feel that the Torah speaks to him as a child of the twentieth century living in the city or in the suburbs or on the farm, then the study of the Bible is as anachronistic as the study of alchemy or astrology. Unable to wait until he has his own car, the youngster takes the keys without perpiission and stealthily goes out in the family car for a ride with friends.
This is more than a breach of ethics.
